How to choose a voltage data logger

MSR voltage data loggers use configurable analogue inputs to record voltage signals or the analogue outputs of external sensors. Depending on the model and ordered configuration, supported unipolar voltage ranges extend up to 0–48.0 V. The number of inputs, maximum recording rate, memory and data-access method differ substantially between models.

Three decisions to make before ordering

1. Input range and resolution

Select the smallest supported input range that still covers the complete expected signal. The listed analogue inputs use 12-bit conversion, but resolution alone does not define total measurement accuracy. Include the external sensor, wiring and complete signal chain when assessing uncertainty.

2. Sampling rate

The MSR160 records up to 1,000 readings per second per analogue channel. The MSR145 reaches up to 50 readings per second, subject to configuration. The wireless MSR145WD, MSR145W2D and the MSR255 record analogue inputs at up to 1 reading per second.

3. Channels and data access

Choose enough analogue channels for every signal that must be recorded simultaneously. Then decide whether USB is sufficient or whether the application benefits from WiFi, Bluetooth, cloud transfer or an integrated display.

Otto Bock Mobility Solutions: electric wheelchair product development

During field testing of the ParaGolfer electric wheelchair, Otto Bock engineers used MSR145 and MSR160 data loggers over several weeks. Sensors connected to four analogue inputs recorded current, voltage, speed and temperature. The MSR160 recorded these values at 16 Hz, and the optional microSD memory allowed more than one billion measured values to be stored.

Frequently asked questions about voltage data loggers

Does every listed logger include voltage inputs as standard?

No. The required analogue-input configuration must be selected when configuring or ordering the logger. Eg. the MSR255 analogue inputs are explicitly optional, and the configurable models offer different numbers of inputs and input ranges.

Can these loggers record 0–48 V directly?

A 0–48.0 V input configuration is available for the models compared above. The connected signal must remain within the configured range. Mains voltage must not be connected directly.

Can the same loggers record 0–20 mA or 4–20 mA signals?

Yes, appropriate current-input configurations are also documented. See the current data logger category for the corresponding selection.

Which model has the highest analogue sampling rate?

The MSR160 has the highest documented analogue rate among these models: up to 1,000 readings per second per channel.

Is 12-bit resolution the same as measurement accuracy?

No. Resolution describes the number of digital levels available from the converter. Overall accuracy also depends on the logger input, the selected range, the external sensor, wiring, noise and calibration.

Need help configuring a voltage data logger?
